Iona basketball coach Rick Pitino is among the college basketball coaches pushing for the NCAA to delay the start of the 2020-21 season to January.
Pitino said Wednesday he would prefer a season that consisted strictly of conference games with the season delayed from its scheduled start in early November until January.
“Suggestion to the NCAA, push the start of the season back to January and only play league games,” Pitino said via Twitter. “Buy some more time for a vaccine and to get things under control. Although I can’t wait to be back on the sidelines, the health of my players and staff is what’s really important.”
Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported “more and more coaches” are backing this model.
The suggestion is in line with the rearranged schedules of several major colleges, which will release students for winter break over the Thanksgiving holiday.
